Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health

Bouten is currently serving as the General Contractor/Construction Manager for Washington State University’s Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health facility in Pullman, Washington. The 62,000-SF, phase one, three-story building will include two floors of Biosafety Level 2 research laboratory space, a 5,000-SF Biosafety Level 3 laboratory supporting both disease research and surveillance functions, and an administrative wing containing conference rooms, offices, and an eventual connection to the Washington Animal and Diagnostic Research Facility. Over 100 staff members will occupy this state-of-the art research center.

Early site-construction efforts involved extending the campus infrastructure chilled water system from approximately 3,000 feet away and building a new steam line utilidor. The building itself, a concrete structure that will incorporate advanced energy management and sustainability features, includes mildly reinforced floors and an exterior of intricately detailed brick cladding with both metal panel and glass curtain wall systems. The atrium, located within the main entry, offers a high degree of transparency to the research being conducted within; a paved entry plaza opens up to a terrace with views of the Palouse. Large sliding doors allow the space to be opened up to support large gatherings. Construction is slated for completion in June 2012. Currently pursuing Silver, the building is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification.
